Written sometime in late 1982, this song was initially titled ‘What Do You See In Him?’ with different lyrics. Along with some of the Smiths earliest songs, it was rehearsed above Joe Moss' Crazy Face shop on Portland Street in Manchester in the winter of 1982-83.
Great article, again. This may be one of the songs Johnny wrote on Joe's Gibson acoustic, he's stated that a few early songs were worked out on Joe's guitar and that, in time, inspired him to get a similar Gibson acoustic which he wrote many more songs on.

I always thought the first line of the original was: “Oh, the nights are too long, when a question prolongs”
